NATURAL SCIENCE

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY

Besides creative media, my other key interest is in physical geography and the science behind the processes of the natural world around us. Understanding why the natural world behaves the way it does and understanding where we fit in, not only on the planet, but in the whole universe, is really valuable in my opinion. Being able to step out onto the doorstep and immediately recognize what the weather is doing, why it's doing it and what phenomena could be presented by it, or being able to understand exactly why an environment looks like it does, or being able to confidently answer people's questions about what is going on around us is a great ambition of mine.

PHENOMENA PHOTOGRAPHY

We are constantly surrounded by natural phenomena, some of which can be incredibly spectacular, yet most people aren't even aware of their existence. Photographing and showing the world these spectacular phenomena and highlighting that you don't necessarily need to be somewhere special to see them is a really inspiring mission in my eyes.

DRAMATIC NATURE

People often refer to the environment and its processes as 'mother nature' when our infrastructure or livelihood is disrupted, as if humans are in some kind of battle with this mystical force that is seeking to claim back what we've taken and fight us off. In reality we are part of the same system, we are a product of nature, another natural process, and quite a powerful one of that. I find it so interesting when the most dramatic of the non-human processes test our infrastructure and demonstrate their power and potential. If I am ever in the vicinity of a large flood or storm, I often go out of my way to see it and capture its power and scale on camera.

Some photos of the damage to Aberystwyth's seafront the morning after Storm Barra

Footage I recorded of Storm Eunice on the morning of the 18th February at and around high tide, which coincided with a storm surge, showing large waves smashing into the seafront in Aberystwyth. The strongest winds were yet to come at this point.

My 'storm cam' recorded a large conifer being torn down behind my back garden by Storm Eunice as gust speeds peaked just after mid-day in Aberystwyth. The wind also pulled  multiple slate roof tiles and a wooden facia from the roof of the house.

NATURE EDUCATION

Further to my interest in understanding and observing the natural world around us, I also enjoy spreading my knowledge and helping others understand what's going on, mostly through videos and infographics.
