While hiking through the Elan Valley on a cold November morning, I spotted some ice in a puddle in a field and decided to pick it up. It was a beautiful piece of ice, quite thick considering the conditions, and underneath was this thick vein of ice. I'm not sure how this vein formed, but I wonder if it could have been a crack that formed and exposed liquid water to the cold air above and caused ice to form along the crack in a peculiar, overexaggerated way.
