20/01/2023 - Rime ice formations

With a promise of incredibly clear skies, no wind and subzero temperatures, I took no hesitation in heading up Pen Pumlumon Fawr to summit my first Welsh mountain in the snow! Fantastic conditions, with snow depths ranging from a few centimetres to knee-deep in places and gloriously clear skies. When we got to the top, the rime ice formations on the fences and trig point were fantastic, I love how big the rime grows on these thin wire fences and blades of grass that occasionally stuck out of the snow. In many places, the rime had fallen off as one great chunk and an icy copy of the fence lay on the ground in front! Quite incredible to see.
