I spotted these peculiar fungi growing in a bog in a recently deforested area of the Rhinogydd mountain range in Snowdonia and was so mesmerised by their looks that I couldn't resist taking a photo and learning more about them.
These peculiar fungi are called Bog Beacons (or more officially Mitrula paludosa), and are often seen growing on decaying plant material in constantly waterlogged environments - bogs. They're found across much of the world and are saprobionts, they help break down dead plant material.
