While descending Bow Fell in the lake district, I spotted this magnificent pattern in the rock. I don't know enough about geology to be able to determine the cause of this pattern at all, or even whether the straight lines are foliation, bedding planes or even striations.
Although I'm likely not correct, I suspect that the straight lines are foliation and the lovely wavy pattern is perhaps igneous or metamorphic in origin. Perhaps there was a magma inclusion into this part of the rock which caused the foliation to get distorted into that wavy shape through melting?
