Despite a dreadfully cloudy forecast, I managed to capture a few images and videos of the partial solar eclipse today from just south of Aberystwyth in Wales. At around 10, just as the eclipse begun, it became clear that I wouldn't get a break in the clouds over Aberystwyth, but to the south I could see some brighter skies so got in the car and drove until I could see glimpses of the sun through the overcast.
I felt the clouds actually added to my images somewhat and made capturing them so much more exciting. Just an eclipsed disk on a black background isn't as exciting as having the clouds moving past and in front of the sun in my opinion.
The images where the sun appears orange are taken with a solar filter that protects the sensor, although these can only be used when there are basically no clouds or very thin clouds, so the white images with clear clouds are taken without any filters, which only worked because the clouds were thick enough. It was quite a balancing act changing out the filters and framing the shots in and around thin sections of clouds whilst pinning the camera down against the wind, all of which was done on the side of the A487 in random little village.
