Whilst drawing my hike up Plynlimon to a close, I spotted a rather bizarre sight in the sky. One of the aircraft overhead appeared to be flying along a grey line suspended in the air. On closer inspection and after a bit of research, I've concluded that the aircraft was in just the right position for its vapour trail to cast a shadow exactly in line with the aircraft's path.
After checking a flight tracking website, I think the aircraft in question was United Airlines flight UA906 from Frankfurt to Chicago, and if you look at the wide but less detailed shot below, you can see that the vapour trail appears to cross the sun directly:
