08/12/2021 - Storm Barra - Significant Wave Damage

On the evening of the 7th December 2021, a spring tide coincided with a hefty storm surge and large waves to create the perfect recipe for destruction on the coast. These pictures are from the morning of the 8th of December, when daybreak revealed the brutal battering that the seafront at Aberystwyth had taken. In the video you can see some grainy footage shot during the night looking along the seafront, and at the enormous waves being catapulted over four storeys high by the impact with the seawall. This relentless lashing managed to rip some chunks out of the seawall and launch them onto the road behind. Some brick flower beds were also torn apart and strewn across the street. Then, to add to the mess even more, the sea plastered everything in sand. Parts of the seafront shelter were pulled apart by the waves and the new bandstand had its windows smashed by the storm.
